On May 9th, Dalton, Carter, and I went to an appointment at Carter's school to see what they would diagnose Carter with. At the appointment was his preschool teacher, the school psychologist, school social worker, and the vice principal. They each went around and around and talked about they evaluated from him during his classroom time. I also had to evaluate Carter too and had to fill out an assessment called GARS Autism Rating Scale in which he was placed in the 90th percentile for communication, 75th percentile for stereotyped behaviors and 50th percentile for social interaction which those are pretty high percentages so they came to a conclusion that he would be diagnosed with Autism. Which only means they he is educationally diagnosed so he can be In the appropriate class for kindergarten. Now we have to take all the paper work that we received from the evaluation and take it to his pediatrician to get him medically diagnosed which will help him get extra help out of the school setting. Also now we have another appointment on the 28th to talk to the school districts Autism counselor and she will let us know which autism kindergarten class he will go too and let us know what the setting in the classroom looks like.
Now I will give you a some facts about Autism
1. Autism is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior.
2. Autism varies greatly from child to another.
3. Autism now affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys.
4. Autism is the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the United States.
5. Now further studies are showing that Autism is caused by genetics and/or environmental issues but still shows there are many causes to Autism.
With this whole journey with our family it has made us stronger and it makes me love and appreciate Carter more than ever. He is such an amazing boy, he is the sweetest, smartest most polite boy I have ever met. Anybody that comes across Carter, their heart will be melted. Jut because he has this diagnoses doesn't change anything, he will always be our child and we love him even more and he is our perfect child!
After the day we found about his diagnoses, Carter's preschool class had a Mother's Day celebration which was really fun. Carter was already at school so I met him in his classroom with all the other kids and their moms. So we got to eat with them and then got to watch them do circle time and they showed us what they do on a regular basis. After that Carter gave me my Mother's Day present that he made in class which was a card and flowers which came in a flower pot that he painted. It was a really fun day to get to see how Carter does at school. Then on Mother's Day, the three of us just had a relaxing day at home and I got my Mother's Day present and then we went to go get frozen yogurt, it was a great day just to hang out just the three of us!
